Japan’s railways are reputed to be the world’s safest and most punctual. Travel by rail is an essential part to any trip in Japan. But going by rail isn’t simply safe and convenient; many of the trains and stations in the rail network have unique features too. Rolling along a scenic route—Resort Shirakami
I enjoyed the slow rolling along a scenic route by Resort Shirakami end to end from Aomori to Akita. Not only could you enjoy the beautiful view of Sea of Japan, you could also admire the Shirakami from afar.
Cassiopeia luxury sleeper
I would love to take the Cassiopeia luxury sleeper one day but it’s so hard to make a booking. And also the unique Ltd Exp like Asahiyama Zoo Train and Lavender Express which I missed in Hokkaido due to the timing of the trains in summer.
Something unique—the Ltd. Exp. Asahiyama Zoo Train
A station of beauty—Kanazawa Station (Ishikawa Prefecture)
Beside Kanazawa Station above, Kyoto Station is also a beauty in itself while there are other quaint, historical stations that are also worth a visit.

Eki-ben: the box lunches that also make rail travel a treat
Last but not least, eki–ben is the essential part of any rail travel in Japan! There are myriad of choices and some could only be bought at a particular station or train.

I had a bento box once when travelling with train in Japan and it was so delicious!
I love eating them and will try to ensure I’ve lunch on board!
